Are you a person with disabilities living in Hawaii and looking for affordable housing? If so, you may be eligible for one of the many programs available to help you find safe and secure housing. The Existing Housing Division of the Hawaii County Office of Housing and Community Development administers federally funded housing assistance programs through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These programs are designed to help low-income families, older people, and people with disabilities find safe and affordable housing in the private market. The Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly known as Section 8, and still commonly referred to as “Section 8”) is the federal government's primary program to help very low-income families, older people, and people with disabilities afford decent, safe, and hygienic housing in the private market.
This program provides rental assistance to eligible households so they can rent a home from a private landlord. To apply for this program, you must contact your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). In addition to the Housing Choice Voucher Program, IHS operates two permanent supportive housing (PSH) programs. These programs offer rent subsidies along with long-term case management services for chronic patients.
Subsidized Apartments HUD also helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants. To apply for this program, contact or visit the management office of each apartment building you are interested in. If you are a person with disabilities living in Hawaii and looking for affordable housing, there are many programs available to help you find safe and secure housing.
